Calderdale Plain Language Guide
Calderdale Council approached Northlight to create a language guide for council staff. The guide sets the council's house style and the booklet is intended for use as a reference guide when writing any literature. The booklet is an extension of the Plain English Campaign ideas of speaking and writing in an easily understandable language and getting rid of jargon.
From an open brief Northlight created concepts with a strong emphasis on typography. Making the letterforms the main focus of the booklet draws attention to the importance of the plain language idea. Bright colours were used to give impact alongside bold display typography which adorns several pages to pull out important headings. The front and back cover have a minimalist feel containing a title, logo, an opening speech mark on the front and closing one on the back. The booklet is perfect bound and printed on uncoated stock giving a soft and natural feel.
